From April 11 to 13, the team of Chernihiv IT Cluster together with Chernihiv Polytechnic National University and Chernihiv Regional State Administration held the Hackathon “Chernihiv without barriers”.
The event brought together more than 60 participants around the idea of accessibility of the urban environment for low-mobility groups: people with disabilities, veterans, the elderly, and parents with baby carriages.
For 48 hours, the Hackathon participants worked hard to create an innovative solution that would allow them to identify and respond to problem areas in the urban environment, engage the public and authorities in solving problems, and plan and build optimal routes.
At the end of the Hackathon, 8 teams, each working on their own part of the IT system, accompanied by experienced mentors, presented their joint result and received gifts from partners and organizers of the event.
Hackathon “Chernihiv without barriers” is part of a larger initiative to create an inclusive urban environment and digitalize communities.
"The problem of barrier-free accessibility is one of the main ones. That is why I would like to see this product not only as a tool for accounting and monitoring of some physical barrier-free facilities, but also as a tool for interaction with people. It should be a software that will simplify the work of managers, provide residents of the region with up-to-date information on the presence of certain elements of inclusion in buildings and create an optimal, comfortable urban environment", said Serhiy Kurenya, acting head of the Department of Urban Planning and Architecture of the Chernihiv Regional State Administration.
In the final stage of the Hackathon, the participants presented a number of digital solutions: an interactive map of urban infrastructure with open access to information on the degree of its accessibility, a system for electronic monitoring and analytics of the barrier-free status of key public and administrative facilities, an online service for finding optimal routes and accessible locations based on different needs, and a digital platform for collecting feedback from residents on existing barriers in the urban environment.
Possibilities for further development of the proposed solutions are currently being considered. Chernihiv IT Cluster, together with partners, is engaged in a dialogue with local authorities on the potential pilot implementation of certain components of the system.
We are grateful to everyone who joined this initiative. Stay tuned — there are many more interesting things to come!
