Olympiad, April 2020

On April 11, the Chernihiv IT Cluster held another programming Olympiad. The situation with the coronavirus pandemic did not prevent the event from taking place, but at the same time changed the format and gave an idea for the topic of the Olympiad task.

Eight teams that had registered to participate gathered online and received instructions to develop a Telegram bot to work with open data on COVID-19, including clear explanations of the functionality and evaluation criteria for the final projects.

What the bot was supposed to do:

  • Show information about the statistics of patients in a country by its name using the API.

  • Show information about the statistics of patients in the country where the user is located by receiving their coordinates.

  • Receive data from the user about a case of coronavirus by address and store it for further use.

  • Provide information about coronavirus cases in a city by its name.

In addition to implementing the technical components, the teams had to prepare a demo of their projects and present them to the jury and all participants of the event, keeping within the three-minute time slot.

During the Olympiad, the teams had an open channel of communication with our experts and could get the necessary advice and guidance.

With the exception of one team, which unfortunately dropped out of the competition, all of them coped with the task in the allotted time and successfully presented their Telegram bot demos. The jury was represented by Oleksandr Skosyr (Head of Development at Astound Commerce), Volodymyr Rudyi (CEO of AgileVision), Volodymyr Bazylevych (Head of the ICS Department at Chernihiv Polytechnic), and Iryna Lysytsia (Director of Chernihiv.IT), who evaluated the tasks and determined the winners. They were the Bot & Shoes (Marko Makhovyk, Oleksandr Sylenok, Oleksandr Furgailov) and Darin & Zerowan (Andrii Kiriienko, Ihor Melikhov) teams, third- and second-year students, respectively, who will traditionally receive scholarships from Chernihiv IT Cluster.

According to the participants, the online format of the Olympiad and the tasks “caught on” with the students, and they all plan to participate in future Chernihiv.IT projects: “The task was interesting; it was also interesting to cooperate with my friends. You feel like a part of something bigger, creating a common result.”
